As a speech-language pathologist, Claire can provide assessment and therapy for children with a variety of speech and/or language needs.
Assessment
Assessment starts with a consultation with the child and family, but may involve other health care or education professionals.
In addition to information given by parents, teachers and other professionals, assessment may include:
a. standardized measures (these give scores based on a large group of children of the same age)
b. non-standardized measures (these give descriptions)
c. language samples
d. observations of the child in conversation and play
The following areas may be assessed:
a. speech sound production
b. ability to understand language (receptive skills)
c. ability to use language (expressive skills)
d. social communication skills
e. fluency (stuttering)
Treatment
Treatment involves using games and activities that are appropriate for the child and target their speech and/or language goals. It may involve objects, pictures, books, toys, play or structured practice. Family involvement is greatly encouraged.
Treatment may occur in a one-to-one setting, a group setting or by advising family, health care or education professionals in intervention programming appropriate to their setting.
